ABOUT CYPRUS GENOME PROJECT

The Cyprus genome project is an open-access whole-genome variant map resource based on 10,000 individuals in Cyprus, developed in collaboration with the Karaiskakio Foundation.

The creation of population-specific variant databases is an essential resource for the study of inherited diseases across populations and can provide key insights into disease susceptibility and responses. Genomic medicine initiatives to integrate high-throughput sequencing into clinical applications have already been implemented in over 14 countries and DNA sequencing is expected to become routine for all patients in fields such as cancer diagnosis. Such information is being gathered by projects such as the Human Variome project (HVP) and Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) which are ensuring that genetic data from around the world is aggregated into open-source databases which can then be accessed by researchers to investigate the links between disease and genetic variation.

The Cyprus Genome Project is the first large-scale, fully anonymised genetic database of the Cypriot population which will provide a resource for future medical research.

The Cyprus Genome Project received the 2022 Cyprus Innovation Award in the category of social innovation.
